The Zalew Bagry (lagoon) is one of the major bodies of water within the limits of Krakow. The coasts of the lagoon overgrown by reed and reedmace fens provide suitable nesting habitats for water birds. The lagoon is stocked with fish therefore anglers are often seen there.
The amphibian species occurring in the area include: common newt, fire-bellied toad, European (common) toad, common tree frog, pool frog, and common grass frog. Two reptile species are also living in the area: scaly (viviparous) lizard and the grass snake. The lagoon is surrounded by moist meadows where, for example, great burnet occurs. During summer, the Bagry lagoon is used by local residents for bathing. Littering is a major problem, and is a frequent cause of water contamination. There is also noise contamination from the nearby railway line.
In The spatial planning study for Krakow city, the lagoon and a major portion of the surrounding area have been designated within the category zone of formation of the urban nature system, urban green areas and river parks system, whereas to the south, along the railway line, building development is planned. In order to protect the valuable natural features of the area, particularly the water birds nesting there, some selected section of the coastal line and water table of the lagoon should be secured against penetration. Additionally, the landscape of the area would benefit enormously when successfully isolated from the railway line by, by for example, planting a tree belt.
