Nature in Kraków
Biodiversity hot-spots / Ponds near Krakow Bonarka railway station

The complex of small bodies of water, some of them dried up, near the Krakow Bonarka railway station. Those still containing water are stocked with fish. The edges are more or less overgrown with reed and reedmace. The dried pond sites are still completely overgrown by aquatic plants which persisted in these places.

The site is used, particularly during summer, for recreation (bathing or angling).

The principal threats come from the construction of a flyover, very close to the ponds, maintaining illegal bathing sites and from litter throughout the area.

The ponds are situated in one of the most valuable areas of the city in terms of landscape and nature. Close to the ponds are the Liban quarry, Krakus mound, Wzgórze Lasoty (hill), Płaszowski Pond and Bonarka nature reserve. The whole area has been proposed by the Foundation for the Support of Ecological Initiatives for designation as a protected landscape-nature complex.
