This 16 m high mound was built in the 7th century. According to a local legend it is the tomb of Krak, the founder of Krakow. The mound offers a magnificent view of Krakow, including the Old Town quarter. The slopes and foot of the hill are covered with regularly mown grass. There are no trees or shrubs. Thre are some patches of secondary thermophilous (Festuco - Brometea class) with a somewhat poorer composition.
The Krakus mound is situated in one of the most valuable areas of the city in terms of landscape and nature. Close to the mound are the Liban quarry, complex of ponds near Krakow-Bonarka railway station, Wzgórze Lasoty (hill), Płaszowski Pond and Bonarka nature reserve. The whole area has been proposed by the Foundation for the Support of Ecological Initiatives for designation as a protected landscape-nature complex.
